Back in 1985, I purchased Roger Axtell's original book Do's and Taboos Around the World: A Guide to International Behavior, and found it very helpful. We will be travelling in Greece this summer, and I ordered his most recent (2007) edition, expecting an update on the original, including information on Greece. The general advice and facts about travel to Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, Russia, India, and the UK are basic. However, we were disappointed that the new book has no information about Greece. So we're researching what we can about food, customs, etiquette, etc. on the Internet instead.
This is a fascinating collection in great detail of cultural ways in most parts of the world. I really can't write a long review about it because I can't put it down. This will become a reference book in my library. If you are going anywhere in the world or are going to be in contact with someone from another culture or part of the world, you can learn about their cultural "do's and don'ts". This guide is geared to business and leisure.
I purchased both "Essential Do's and Taboos" and "Do's and Taboos of humor around the world" by Axtell. Both books are good and if you have an interest, buy one or the other, but don't buy both. I expected some of the same info in each book but not entire sections copied word for word. I enjoyed the book but just regret buying both as that was a waste.
Sent this as a gift to my son in Vienna who works for the EU and he found some of it he already knew but quite a bit was new and enjoyable.
If you are ever planning to go to another country, or are just interested in other countries' customs, this book is a must. Written in an easy to read format, it can be read front to back, or you can use the index and jump directly to what you need to know. Great book!
Some general guidance, but I wouldn't consider comprehensive, a lot of high level and common sense, I had hoped for more in depth treatment.
