This was not an easy book to write. I started the book in the summer of 2017, but quickly put it on hold because reliving what I had survived was very painful for me. Although, I will say, staying in a relationship with a narcissist was not an option for me, because staying would have been even more painful than leaving. I was becoming physically and emotionally unwell as the years passed by. In December of 2017, I felt like God was pushing me to write this book. I spoke at length with my brother, who said, "Laura, when the Lord asks you to do something, you can't say 'no'." I prayed about it, then I hibernated for four months, mostly on weekends, and wrote until I was depleted. I understand there are women and men out there who have been through even more abuse than I withstood. I hope you find the courage to speak up, too. If anything, perhaps Ugly Love will help you understand what narcissism is and how it can effect you. What you decide to do about staying or leaving the partnership is up to you. I've met men and women who have stayed, and I've spoken at length with those who left. I can tell you this: I have not met one person who regrets leaving after the drama of the initial departure is over.I am pulling for you no matter what you decide. Laura Charanza is a two-time survivor of narcissistic abuse. After four decades of pain and self-doubt caused by loving narcissists in her life, Laura understands why abuse victims feel unworthy, unlovable and intrinsically broken. Laura grew up with a narcissistic parent, then married a narcissist and stayed with him for many years. Narcissists can't really love or change, and Laura understands how the damage accumulates.After Laura left her marriage, she started her path to healing and becoming the woman God designed her to be. Laura has worked with psychologists, physicians, spiritual healers and life coaches to learn what it takes to identify the abuse and overcome the agony and insecurity. Laura helps you find your way to freedom, peace and love. Laura is a former television news journalist who covered breaking news for CBS and ABC affiliates across the United States. Laura also did occasional live reports for CNN, and some of her work was broadcast on BBC.Laura has now dedicated her career to helping sick children. I originally just downloaded the sample, and thought OMG....how could I have been so stupid? I realise now I wasn't stupid...I was just sucked in by typical narcissistic behaviour masquerading as love. Love doesn't rant and rage and rave, shame and scorn for years and years. Love doesn't seek to limit your potential, keep you small...and love certainly doesn't a week before Christmas in a fit of rage, text "I quit." That was the gift - that and this book and the story shared that was so relatable - so me. Looking forward to reading the chapters on divorce so I can prepare for the road ahead. A great resource for anyone in a relationship with a narcissist. I also recommend, "getting the love you want."
I guess it easier to get away from Narcissist if your not old and disabled. When you don’t have money for healing it a lot different. All the things she suggests is great if you have a good job.
What I liked about Ugly Love was leaning to understand narcissism. While reading Laura's book, I was able to relate to so many of her circumstances and and experiences --- and realized I have known several narcissists in my lifetime. I now know how to recognize them, and not accept their behavior and tendencies. I'm thankful for the book because I'm better equipped to handle these people, and have accepted that it is okay to walk away.
Anytime I buy a book like this for self help I want to see atleast one thing that will help. It is well put together and I am going to purchase the Anger Trap as well by Les Carter. I thank Laura for expressing her truth to help others.
This book is a must read for any person whether you be male or female going through a narcissistic relationship! Your eyes will be opened along with knowing you can and will survive
Content is important and insightful. Please, know that I mean this most kindly. Please, have this book edited and then publish a new edition. It is difficult to understand the content through the duplicate paragraphs and other issues. Wishing you the best.
