You can't go wrong with Creative Haven coloring books, with their one-sided format, good quality perforated pages, and talented artists. This book is no exception. Tim Foley's latest is a collection of trees... trees of all kinds from the elegant bonsai to the stately oak and everything in between. The variety is amazing. The trees are drawn straight on and from below (which gives a wonderful perspective). There are single trees and groups of them. There are flowering trees, palms, gnarly-branched trees, a willow reflected in the water, and even a tree-house. Every page has a caption that identifies the type of tree, and it can be found on the bottom just beyond the page perforation so it doesn't intrude on the picture.I have all three of Tim Foley's coloring books, and love the woodcut-style designs. For those who have never tried coloring a woodcut-style illustration before, you will find that they require a slightly different coloring style than you are used to. There are a lot of black areas, with picture details in white. As a result, there are not large expanses of white to color and shade. Instead, you color a complex collection of small white areas around the black areas. As a result, the colors stand out boldly again the black to form strikingly beautiful pictures. If you are used to coloring with pencils, I suggest you try markers instead, since the pencil color will tend to stray over and cover the black lines and ruin the woodcut effect. Since the pages are single-sided, marker bleed-through is not a problem as long as you place a piece of paper behind the page you're coloring to prevent any marks on the following page. If you love a unique coloring challenge, you'll love this book!
I don't understand the meh reviews of this book. If you liked this artist's Woodcut Designs book you'll like this book. In fact that book has a tree in it. This book trees are drawn in the same style. And as for the drawings are dark.....so are black backgrounds. But they make your colors POP! Here all the shading is done. If you add more dark colors yes your going to have a dull dark tree. Add bright greens and golden browns and it's beautiful. And as for the name of the trees not being there YES THEY ARE! Bottom inside corner just behind the perforated line.
Nice single-sided perforated pages with beautiful tree designs. I really like these woodcut books by this author/artist. I have two so far. These images would look good colored in either realistically or fantastically. I see a few negative/poor reviews on here. If you check the "look inside" feature, you will see examples of the images. There is a lot of black because the book was created in a woodcut style. That means that it mimics a printing technique where ink is applied to a raised area of a wood block. I think it is fabulous.

Gorgeous wood prints! Unique book....single sided....I am using markers and it is easy and beautiful when done!
I love Creative Haven coloring books and I love pictures of trees.I was so excite when my order was delivered today.After flipping through the pages of the book.I actually picture before you start to color the picture has so much black shaded on the picture.I'm not crazy of the black shading on the pictures.The pictures are on its own page and you can tear the pictures out.I used sharpies and markers , they do bleed through the picture.
