This book was alright... It probably deservers closer to a 3.5. The story was ok and everything was well written, I just didn't like that the girls all fall in love with boys, and it seems like that is their calling in life. Without a boy to love them, they are nothing. I guess it is partly critiqued in the book though, and there are certain characters portrayed who do not fit into the norm of goddess and her man, but overall the book is heteronormative and places a lot of importance on male-female relationships. The heroine of the story is a young girl/ woman who is claimed late as a man's goddess. She feared that no man would ever love her, and ends up being the goddess of the village lord. She must figure out a way to save her village and release men and women from the curse that forces men to cover their faces until they find and are loved by their goddess.
Wow. I was not expecting to be so drawn into this book. It was written by a friend of a friend, and that was my motivation to buy it: support friends, pay it forward. I had no idea what an exciting ride I was going to be taken on. That's the first time that I've actually said those words and meant it! This author is gifted and poised to be something like a new Lois Lowry. This had me thinking of other dystopian YA (like The Giver series, speaking of Lois Lowry), but then it took its own innovative path that you really, really wanted to see to the end. The things that made it hard to put down for other things (like going to work) were the pacing, the nature of relationships between men and women, sentiment, the meaning of traditions, cynicism, fury, questions about equality, all of the stuff that should be appealing to contemporary readers. All in all, this is an amazingly well-written and smartly-told story that deserves to become something huge. People need to be reading and talking about this book.
Noll lives in a world where men are subject to the whims of the women they love, their goddesses. Until they find their goddess and their love is returned, they are forced to live masked, as without the love of their goddess they risk death if anyone sees their face. Above this village, there is a castle where a mysterious lord lives, who the villagers pay tribute to despite his existance being half-legend.The setting of the book has a very magical realism feel, rather than being straight fantasy, which I really enjoyed. The idea that the customs of the village have real consequences that cannot easily be explained got me interested immediately. As the story progressed and more information about Noll's world was revealed, I became even more intrigued! I'm really looking forward to the sequels.Noll herself is a very headstrong girl, one who can be found in many YA novels. She fell in love with her childhood friend, who finds his goddess in her sister instead of her, so she's left as nobody's goddess. The truth of why none of the men of the village love her is revealed slowly, and the truth of where her village's customs come from is a twist I didn't see coming. She has a lot of character, but is slow to understand herself, something that I hope will be explored more in the second book! This book actually touched on two of my favorite literary tropes, but I unfortunately can't say what they are without major spoilers. Overall, it's a thoughtful read and, as I said, I'm excited to read the sequels when they come out!
I'm torn between two and three stars. The story began with great promise, and although I had a hard time understanding the point behind the rules, it was still interesting. Somewhere around the middle it just lost me completely. The main character was selfish and a bit of a brat. She spent the entire book hating a concept that she ultimately created. In the end when she finally gets everything she thinks she wants she's still not happy. The saying be careful what you wish for definitely applies in her case. She risked the lives of all she cared about because she wanted something that didn't belong to her. In case you can't tell, I do not like the main character. I'm not sure if you're supposed to but I definitely do not like her. Because of that I find it difficult to give a higher rating. The entire book is from her prospective. I can't really think of more to say without giving away the story, but it's not a must read book. Not for any lack on the authors part, but because the main character will give you a migraine.
This book. I've been waiting for it to come out since I found it on Goodreads in February! And it was sooo worth it!It was all sorts of wonderful.Firstly, the cover is fabulous! The heroine is chestnut coloured, which sadly is rare in this genre and was the first thing that caught my eye. Secondly, the description of the story was unlike anything I've ever read before which was awesome!I am very happy to report that this book did not disappoint! It even has a heck of a twist! And definitely has a place on my favorites shelf!A great start to hopefully a beautiful series!
A very unique story, Noll the heroine, loves a man that can never be hers. In a far off land where each man is bonded to a goddess, only loving her and obeying her, Noll fights tradition. As the story unfolds it becomes more twisted as the wheel of fate circles back to the beginning. Hating the original goddess, then becoming her as Noll sets the fate of all she loves. And finally she starts to find herself towards the end. An unusual story, with enough twists and turns to keep the readers interest. A real page turner.
