My new guitar teacher said "bring in your books, let's see if we can use any of them." I had three. This one, he pulled aside. "My favorite!" There is good info on hand position, the way fingers should move, and exercises that are basic, designed to get your hand in shape to play. We're working right out of this book. And it's not a new book--been around for years. The more I use this book, the more I appreciate it. We're working through about five exercises a week--some of them though basic, offer accompaniments so you can play "real music" with your instructor. Years ago, I played flute a bit and unlike piano (my first instrument) you don't have so much of a self accompaniment with guitar if you are playing a single treble line. Adding another player allows you to concentrate on making music and not being as self-conscious. There are some good basic songs as well--early in the book, such as "Au Claire de la Lune" but with a thumb accompaniment that lets you learn to play both even at the beginning of your musical journey.This book has been around a long time, but it is a useful book for studying guitar and a real classic.
I have been trying to learn classical guitar playing for sometime and even went to a teacher a few years ago. I'm picking it up again and wanted to get a quick ramp-up on the technique and sight reading. Ordered this and upgraded my guitar as well.Once you buy this book, the next best thing you can do is to make it coil bound by giving it to some place like FedEx. It costed me $6 and they did an excellent job and now I can use the book on my stand without any issue.The book is a great place to start sight reading. I went back to the basics and have been progressing. I can't vouch for the techniques (left/right hand positioning etc.) as I'm using the techniques that I learnt from my very capable guitar teacher. Everything else, sight reading exercises, repertoire, and some history offered regarding Parkening's journey and his interaction with Andrés Segovia are really good and entertaining.I also remember my guitar teacher using some of the exercises (duets included) from this book when I first learnt classical guitar. Overall, I love this book and can't wait to progress and move on to volume 2.
I use this method series for a few of my piano students who already have a few years of keyboard experience, and it works quite well because they don't have to deal with the music fundamentals, like notes recognitions, rhythms, and the inherent counterpoints found on the printed scores, and can concentrate on the fast-paced learning materials. Having said that, I wouldn't recommend this book to real young guitar beginners or beginners who have received no previous instructions on any instrument.I also recommend the version that has an accompanying CD because it gives the students an opportunity to hear what the end product should sound and a chance to play along with a seasoned musician.
My guitar teacher uses "The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method - Volume 1: Guitar Technique" as the text for his beginning guitar students. While my teacher doesn't always agree with Mr. Parkening on nuances of technique (he told me, "Ignore these pages on hand positioning; do it the way I showed you.") the book is very useful for teaching/learning sight reading. As a person of (ahem) a certain age, I honestly doubted that I could learn to sight read. However, after only a few weeks of working with my teacher using Mr. Parkening's incremental method, I can now easily read and find on the fretboard a number of notes -- each week we add three to six more. I believe that as we keep chipping away at it I'll achieve my dream of being able to sight read and play increasingly difficult classical pieces on the guitar.I find the duets very inspiring -- when I play my easy part along with my teacher (he gets the harder part) it gives me some perspective on where I'm headed and a delicious taste of what's possible. Having these duets is a lovely inducement to work hard enough to play the next one, and the next -- a carrot dangling before me to tempt me through the occasional sticky (repetitive, difficult) practice session.One important caveat: I think this book would be difficult to use without a teacher. There is so much material that I'm getting from my teacher directly -- seating position, how to hold the guitar, important nuances of hand and finger positioning which he gently corrects throughout the lesson, learning how to mark up and learn pieces, how to read ahead and place my fingers ahead for the next note(s), etc. He helps me shape my nails properly, which is vitally important for a good tone! Personally, I would not rely on this book or any other book in the absence of a good and patient teacher. When we begin guitar (or any other instrument), that is the time when we establish our foundation. It's very difficult to unlearn bad habits once they're formed.UPDATE: I found the version with the CD and it is very helpful. Four years after beginning my guitar studies with this book, my sight-reading and playing have grown by leaps and bounds. I can't begin to express how thrilled I was when I was able to read and play the final work in this book, a beginner-intermediate arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by J.S. Bach. Thank you, Mr. Parkening for a VERY helpful method book -- and thanks to my teacher for skillfully guiding me through the early stages of classical guitar studies using Mr. Parkening's method.
Decades ago, I studied classical guitar pretty seriously, but when I picked up the instrument again my teacher recommended this beginner book to re-lay the foundation of my technique. I found it very high-quality and was delighted to recapture pretty quickly a lot of what I missed for so many years. I love Christopher Parkening as a performer and how faithfully he is carrying on the classical guitar tradition of his mentor, André Segovia. You won’t be disappointed!
