From the Author

I wanted to write a book that would give people the knowledge to build ,ANY standard transmission. When I looked out other books pertaining to this subject I noticed that some of the techniques had many faults and some were just plain dangerous. Transmissions are a daily job for me. They have been since 1981. If your building a transmission and your reputation depends on it, you want to use proper techniques combined with quality parts that will inevitably make both you and your customer happy. I spent a great deal of road time, taking pictures and interviewing people so the reader could see the inside of a Nascar transmission for example as well as build popular 4 and 5 speed transmissions.Hope you enjoy the book. I found Paul on YouTube showing how to work on T5's. He also sells the rebuild kits and upgrade parts. After reading reviews about people buying kits elsewhere and having problems, I've decided that Paul is the best contact to supply and support my rebuild project. The book is a great addition to the videos (5speeds.com). A great resource! THANKS PAUL!!

the definitive reference for t5 transmissions.check out pauls vidoes too. excellent.helll - email paul and he will respond too.

One of the neat things about this transmission rebuild manual is the history of the HP transmissions. I thought I was pretty up on Muncie’s, and T-10’s which were IT in my day. I at least doubled or tripled my knowledge reading this book. For instance, I didn’t know Muncie’s and T-10s were produced with a gear set where 3rd gear was an overdrive. Didn’t know that GM reverted back to T-10’s during the gas crunch when higher geared rear axles were used. Didn’t know the Chrysler A833 was the strongest tranny, and was used to replace Muncie’s by serious drag racers. there is a lot of interesting info in this book, you can’t go wrong!

The book has great information good pictures and is Clearly written. Some of the information to little dated but if you're working on that generation of cars and transmissions then it's a great book. And one more small point is that there aren't many books on transmission rebuilding this happens to be a good 1.

Pauls knowledge of manual transmissions is insane. Thos manual is a must.Excellemt illustrations and information on rebuilding my T5.

The book is solid- But the support is OUTSTANDING!I sent an the author (Paul at 5speeds.com) a question on replacing my input shaft- he got back to me an hour later ON A SUNDAY EVENING!!I thought I needed a new inout shaft ($185) turns out I don't- even though he could have told me I did an got a quick sale.)There are some great how to videos on his youtube channel- http://www.youtube.com/user/GearWorldTV that explained the nuts and bolts of gear synchronization. (The syncro explanation and spec 25 assembly were helpful to me)

this is a fantastic book, must have for Transmission repair.

I bought this manual to help me understand how to rebuild a Ford Toploader transmission for my Sunbeam Tiger. I used it throughout the rebuild process. I have no experience using the other sections of this book. I'd like to be able to say it was indispensable, but...I can't quite say that. See below. The good:Overall, this is a very well-written book. There are good descriptions of the process steps, and a good number of photographs. The nitpicks:When I pay money for a book like this, I expect everything to be right. It's not hard to imagine how badly things could go wrong if a photograph is captioned incorrectly, or if a step is left out somewhere. My confidence level in the accuracy of this book was not what it could have been, primarily because of the large number of spelling and grammatical errors I spotted. I know, I'm being picky here. But it's just not up to the standards of OEM or mainstream (Chilton or Haynes) manuals. I've seen this more frequently with newer publications like this, where I suspect there is less editorial oversight than there once was. I'm sure the author knows his stuff. But it feels as though the book was rushed into print. The bad:I can't really say anything about this book was bad, except that you may not need it in the first place. I say that because when I rebuilt my Toploader, the rebuild kit I bought came with a very nice set of rebuild instructions included. They were every bit as thorough as the instructions in this book, and covered a few additional details here and there. Obviously, that cannot be assumed of every rebuild kit supplier for every type of transmission. So, your experience may vary.So even if you buy this and just read it, without ever touching your transmission, it's a pretty good source for learning how your transmission is put together. I'm glad I bought it, and find it a valuable part of my library.
