I have bought other yoga books before; but I'm SO glad I took a chance with this one! I am 66 now, but after years of hard farm work, schoolbus driving, I have found that I no longer want to do 'hard core' workouts, to stay active and fit. Parts of me hurt now and then, I am a semi regular chiropractor patient and I retired from schoolbus driving (30 years), with health issues of high blood pressure, and an overload of stress. I have run 5ks for a few years, now I'm not anxious to do even that. But I clean houses, walk a LOT, so I am active. But, the will and the want to, to do 'hard core' isn't there. I take tai chi for seniors, for falls prevention and balance. This led me to do qi gong dvds at home,,further research led me to chair yoga dvds. I can do yoga, but not much on the mat, my body doesn't like that sometimes. I wanted a yoga book, a gentle guide to keep me doing gentle(r) exercise, knowing I was on the right path. This book does that. I love the drawings, rather than the pictures of size 0 models I often see in other exercise books, or the bending into pretzels pictures I've seen in other yoga books. I really enjoy being told that I AM doing what my body/mind needs, and NOT to strive to do more.

This book is a gem!I have been teaching yoga for 17 years and am a yoga teacher trainer for both entry and advanced level yoga teachers. As such, I am always on the lookout for solidly researched, well-written books on yoga technique 1) to enhance my teaching skills and teach to other yoga teachers, and 2) to recommend to students for doing yoga at home when they can’t get to a yoga class. Relax Into Yoga for Seniors fits the bill on both counts.First, the layout of the book is comprehensive and approachable, beginning with basic information and guidelines on safety and the practical aspects of yoga, to laying out a 6-week progression of poses and actions that allow the student to gradually become more comfortable, strong, and flexible. Further, a huge plus is the book’s focus on making yoga accessible to all people, to all types of bodies. The book’s target audience is seniors, and it accomplishes that goal very well. However, most of its guidance could apply to the general population, anyone new to yoga, or anyone just wanting to take a more gentle approach to beginning yoga. Moreover, its guidance on yoga adaptations for such challenges as arthritis, osteoporosis, joint replacement, heart/lung/circulatory issues, chronic conditions, and cancer, all issues present in both our aging and general populations, along with as its illustrations of real people with real, less-than-perfect bodies, makes it highly accessible to a wide audience.In addition, the book is a treasure trove of additional resources. There are links in every chapter for downloading audio recordings to lead the reader through the breath work, meditations, and yoga postures presented in the book. The authors have even thought about yoga teachers and have provided a link to a guide for helping yoga teachers begin adjusting their instructions to safely and effectively work with aging populations.So, I shall be recommending this excellent book as a resource to yoga students, especially to gentle and extra gentle yoga students, to yoga students healing from trauma and stress, and to yoga teachers as a resource to enhance their teaching skills for teaching seniors and students with illnesses, injuries, and special conditions.Finally, I had the good fortune to study with the authors in 2011 at Duke Integrative Medicine’s Therapeutic Yoga for Seniors Professional Training (now Integrative Yoga for Seniors). Their knowledge and skill in adapting yoga to the needs of seniors, as well as their deep understanding of the yoga practice and ability to explain how to safely adapt the yoga came through in every class. This book represents their deep love of sharing yoga with all.

The poses are mostly just laying there, RELAXING. There is no way you can build strength from the poses in this book. It appears that the "majority" of the reviews are friends or acquaintances of the authors, who think the book is great but gives no reasoning for the book being great because it appears they didn't actually use the book, they just liked that it was a great concept.I am 61, with osteoporosis and I need to stretch and build up my muscles. At the end of the book there are some poses but most of the book is mostly about breathing and resting. It's laying and breathing or sitting and breathing. I realize that yoga teaches mindfulness but I wanted more. The book has pencil diagrams of people laying on the floor for instance, breathing to relax. The title says this was a program for Strength but not til I got to the end of the book, did I see a Bridge pose.

I've only read 1/3 of this book and I'm already more relaxed! The philosophy fits with the type of yoga I enjoy (no contortions, comfortable temperature) -- and everything is possible with a little searching for the right adaptation. Yoga for everyone, no matter your particular issues or (perceived) inabilities. (dealing with cancer? replacement parts? excess weight? Don't want to embarrass yourself or hold back a class?) The benefits of yoga are profound, and this book makes yoga available to us all. If you can breathe.... Im a female in my 70's who never even tried yoga until just a few years ago. Luckily my first teacher adopted the philosophy of this book. Read it!

My yoga partner and I wanted something to do that was easy for both of us. This book shows drawings of real people, you meet them and the end of the book, doing this yoga exercises. My partner is 77 and worried about the kinds of positions and poses she would be required to perform. This is a step by step way to stretch, breathe, and tone without becoming a pretzel. A great choice for ANY beginner~ age aside!
