About the Author

Amy Dell is Professor and Graduate Coordinator of Special Education programs at The College of New Jersey. She has been teaching courses on assistive technology for 25 years, from the early days of Apple IIe computers with 5 ¼” floppy disks and adaptive firmware cards, through the early Macintosh and Windows days of 3 ½” disks and CD-ROM’s, to the present day of iPads, apps and “the cloud.” She has directed several state and federally funded projects focused on assistive technology, including the Central New Jersey Assistive Technology Program for Individuals who are Blind or Visually Impaired (funded by the NJ Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired) and the Adaptive Technology Center for NJ Colleges (funded by the NJ Commission on Higher Education).  She also directs the college’s Center on Assistive Technology and Inclusive Education Studies (CATIES), which provides trainings and assistive technology evaluations to P-12 schools in the state.   Deborah A. Newton is the interim Associate Dean of the School of Education at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) in New Haven, Connecticut. As a professor in the Department of Special Education and Reading at SCSU, she served as the department chairperson and coordinator of the master’s-level concentration in assistive technology. For many years she was an assistive technology specialist at a nonprofit center in Whippany, New Jersey, and before that, an elementary school. She holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Cincinnati, a master’s degree from The College of New Jersey, and a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz. Dr. Newton presents frequently at assistive technology conferences and remains active as an assistive technology consultant.   Jerry G. Petroff is a professor in the Department of Special Education, Language and Literacy at The College of New Jersey. He serves as director of the New Jersey Center on Complex and Sensory Disabilities, the Career and Community Studies Program for young adults who have intellectual disabilities, and the Work Skills Prep Program, a residential summer program to improve work skills of 20 students who are blind/visually impaired and have multiple disabilities. Dr. Petroff has over 38 years of experience working on behalf of children, youth, and adults with disabilities. Holding a doctorate in psychological studies in special education and a master’s degree in speech pathology and audiology, he teaches courses and consults with local school districts on inclusive education, teaching students with complex disabilities, and the transition of students with disabilities from school to adult life.

For seventy-two bucks for a book that costs two dollars to produce is a rip off! And to add insult to injury, you have to provide your own loose leaf binder for it! No wonder why the cost of "higher education" is out of the reach of most people.

I have been working in water and desalination in Australia for 38 years, currently with the National Centre of Excellence in Desalination. In assessing the worth of a text book, I like to see a wide range of topics that are well organised by an author who has practical experience. A poor book has a lot of words but little information. Mr Voutchkov's book has a great deal of useful material on a very broad range of subjects, but is concise and has a good list of reference material for those who want more. I found it a pleasure to read. It touches on all the important facets of the planning, design and operation of desalination plants and is well illustrated, interesting and easy to read.To test the practicality of the book, I gave it to our technician Mr George Horvath, a mechanical fitter with more than 15 years' experience in all aspects of reverse osmosis plant design, construction and operation. He said: "Being an experienced desalination practitioner and avid reader of numerous technical publications, I found it difficult to put this book down. It is extremely well segmented from the contents through to the index and it is easy for anyone with limited water treatment knowledge to grasp the basic concepts."So for people involved in research, designing and building plants or developing water policy, and even for those who are not in the water industry but have an interest in the subject, this is a book which contains a wealth of information. Desalination is a large and rapicdly growing industry worldwide and will help sustain the lives of more and more people in the future as population grows and weather and climate become less predictable.

This book is quite helpful in learning basic engineering of membrane desalination. With the author’s wealth experience in engineering of real membrane desalination plants and pilot testing, this book covers the entire range of membrane desalination engineering including not only review of process but also real plants’ current situation, challenges and specific solutions.This book provides us with the detailed description on water quality characterization of each source of intake, each kind of pretreatment process such as conventional and membrane processes as well as RO process and post treatment. Although the author does not devote much space to RO membrane, this book is quite useful with extensive and practical information based on the author’s actual experiences at plants. In view of the increase in desalination plants constructed all over the world, a larger number of people who engage in the plant projects including engineers, managers and operators could get benefits from the book. In addition, the discussions on discharge management of desalination plants suggest a way for addressing the global environment problems. This is a college text book and a good book for serious engineers. I don't know if Nickoly Voutchkov is the smartest man in the room, but I know it isn't me. I am glad that at my age I can still follow this stuff. I hope that people can make good use of the information

Very poor quality of tables and pictures. More that just "blurred". In some of them you'd need luck if you want to distinguish or read the text inserted. The main text is well structured and technically good though. Strictly, the book, as a reference in desalination, deserves at least a 4-5 star rating, but it is shame what the editor has done with the images. A 2 stars review is even generous.

I’ve been buying a version of this book for the past three years.They all of sharp detailed photos and a wide variety of knife designs are covered.90% + of the knives are customs. This isn’t the book you want if you are looking for examples from knife “brands”.At the end of each boom there is a “Factory Trends” section that has a few pages of production - mid-tech Knives.Note that 30% or so of the pages are devoted to knife maker and resource listings.I would prefer it if more content was devoted to knives instead of the “White Pages” of custom knife makers.That said, I’ll certainly be purchasing the 2019 Edition at the end of the year.

Now that I regularly watch Forged in Fire, the yearly Knives books are more interesting and informative. Last year I made the mistake of ordering the Kindle version which was not nearly as satisfying as a "real" book. I do agree with on reviewer who commented on the number of art knives, I'd like to see more working knives.

I get one every year. High quality pictures and some good articles. I would recommend this book for anyone from a collector to just flipping pages looking at some very nice knives.

About the Author

Amit Bandyopadhyay is Herman and Brita Lindholm Endowed Chair Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University (WSU). He received his BS degree in metallurgical engineering from Jadavpur University (Kolkata, India) in 1989, MS degree in metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) in 1992, and Ph.D degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington (USA) in 1995. In 1995, he joined the Center for Ceramic Research at Rutgers University for his postdoctoral training. In 1997, he joined WSU as an assistant professor, and was promoted to an associate level in 2001 and to the full professor level in 2006. His research expertise is focused on additive manufacturing of hard materials toward structural and biomedical applications. He has published more than 250 technical articles. He holds 11 US patents, has edited eight books, and has supervised more than 35 graduate students for their degrees in physics, mechanical engineering, and materials science and engineering. Among others, Professor Bandyopadhyay received the CAREER award from the US National Science Foundation and the Young Investigator Program award from the US Office of Naval Research. Professor Bandyopadhyay is a fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors, the American Ceramic Society, the American Society for Materials, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been working in the areas of additive manufacturing of advanced materials since 1995. Susmita Bose is Herman and Brita Lindholm Endowed Chair Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) at Washington State University (WSU). She received her BS degree from Kalyani University (India) in 1990, MS from the Indian Institute of Technology―Kanpur in 1992, and Ph.D from Rutgers University (New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA) in 1998. In 1998, she joined the MME at WSU as a research assistant scientist in materials science and engineering, and since then she has been working with rapid prototyping/3D printing of bone tissue engineering scaffolds with controlled chemistry, especially with calcium phosphates, surface modification of metallic implants, and drug delivery. In 2001, she started as an assistant professor in the MME, and was promoted to associate professor in 2006 and to full professor in 2010. Her awards include the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers (the highest honor given to a young scientist by the US President at the White House) from the US National Science Foundation, the 2009 Schwartzwalder-Professional Achievement in Ceramic Engineering award, and the 2014 Richard M. Fulrath award from the American Ceramic Society. Dr. Bose was named as a "Kavli fellow" by the US National Academy of the Sciences. She has supervised more than 30 graduate students in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, and bioengineering. Dr. Bose has published more than 220 technical papers, has edited six books, and holds three US patents. She is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the American Ceramic Society. Her group research on 3D printed bone tissue engineering scaffolds with controlled chemistry has been featured by the AP, BBC, NPR, CBS News, MSNBC, ABC News, and many other TV and radio stations, magazines, and news sites all over the world.

Excellent book for building vocabulary; I bought a copy several years before I retired in 2012. Liked it so much, I got a complete class set for the 8th graders I was working with. They loved working on this in small groups.5 minutes to give directions, announce teams (different each time), and allow for moving desks.25 minutes working out the lessons together (all students pitched in because there was no time to get off task).10 minutes to report out.5 minutes for me to orally quiz on the words (students just called out answer or, in rotation, 1 person from each team stood and answered to score a point)I loved it when students would share a sentence from the book they were reading that used one of the words we'd studied!Still use my original copy plus a new one to work with children I tutor.

I teach an ENL conversation class to advanced speakers, and I use this book as a way to build vocabulary and fine-tune pronunciation. Each of the 42 lessons contain: 12 vocabulary words with definitions; examples of how to use the word in a sentence; passages using the words; several fill-in-the word activities; and word usage exercises. It's a wonderful book for my foreign students, but I also think any adult or high school student could benefit from it. Each chapter begins with an interesting quote by a famous person that relates to words or word usage. The book also includes practice tests, 100 frequently misspelled words and 125 additional difficult, but essential words. It's a very useful book at a great price that can be used by anyone who wants to build their vocabulary.

I am using this book to help an adult student improve his literacy skills. The book is very well done and includes a fine selection of words, their definitions, fill-in-the-blank sentences, and other challenges to assist in word retention. Plus, just reading through each assignment has been very helpful for my student. The book is a true pleasure. Hey, I've learned some things as well!

My daughter actually used this book (out of many other vocabulary books) and benefited from it. But since she marked all over it I bought another copy for my younger son, and I hope he will use it and benefit from it as well. I like the simple format of the book in lessons. Each lesson has a few words and the student gets to first learn them and then use them in different ways, which reinforces the meaning of the word. Thumbs up.Highly recommended. I love educational books which keep things simple but effective.

I bought this book to replace a tattered copy I have been using for years. I assign one lesson a week in my directed studies class and supplement the lesson with a slates exercise and a spelling/vocabulary test based on the lesson. Not terrible but not particularly good. If this is a subject that has interested you for awhile, you are probably familiar with 90% of it. If you're new to this concept, your learn some stuff but you will also be bored by its repetitiveness. I was greatly disappointed in the section dealing with "water bears," aka tardigrades. These are amazing animals with so many features that uniquely qualify them as interplanetary travelers. She touches on them, but not in depth.The author claims that she is trying not to be Earth-centric, to have an open mind as to what alien life might look like but I would say she fails in this. Her treatment of aquatic life is very dismissive, as is her treatment of plant life (or non-animal life to be more general). She makes assumptions about what alien intelligent life must look like without examining all of the forms that possibly intelligent life takes on Earth. For example, hands and opposing thumbs are NOT necessary as seen by animals as diverse as cephalopods and elephants.In general, the book can teach you some things but it will not expand your mind.

Mrs Preston has a lot to say and is very insightful in her discussions. You finish the book much wiser than when you started - recommended.

Developments in technology, advanced telescopes, and new methods to identify and evaluate the habitable worlds have made significant strides in astrobiology. A number of habitable worlds have been reported since this book has been written.A brief discussion of the current state of discoveries of exoplanets is as follows: It is progressively becoming evident that we have to treat life as a cosmic phenomenon whose emergence and driving forces should be viewed independently from the natural history of Earth. We are learning that life may be born and thrive in the harshest environments such as severe droughts, in presence of toxic compounds, extreme cold temperatures and even certain amount of ionizing radiation from the harshest environments. It has already been detected and identified as Tardigrades (water bears) on earth. They are microscopic animals that survive exposure to space and survives over sub-zero temperatures, unrelenting solar winds and an oxygen-deprived space vacuum.Planets come in a huge variety of sizes and orbits. Some are gas giants hugging close to their parent star; others are icy, some rocky. NASA and other agencies are looking for a special kind of planet: one that’s the same size as Earth, orbiting a sun-like star in the habitable zone. As of now, according to NASA, there are 3394 confirmed exoplanets; 1250 are ice giants; 1006 gas giants; 777 super earths: 348 terrestrial and 13 exoplanets are of unknown nature. Among these, the most earth like planets are; Kepler 181f (1.11 times Earth radius); Kepler 442b (1.34 times Earth); Kepler 438b (1.1 times Earth); Kepler 62f (1.41 times Earth); GJ 66.7C c (1.5 times Earth) and Wolf 1061c (1.64 times Earth). In August 2016 a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri known as Proxima b, (1.3 times earth) was discovered. It is a rocky world, residing in the star's habitable zone, just 4.7 million miles from its host star (Earth is 93 million miles from Sun), and completes one orbit every 11.2 Earth-days. The exoplanet is tidally locked, which means it does not spin on its own axis like Earth. Moon is also tidally locked to Earth and shows only one face to Earth.Mars exploration by three NASA rovers have yielded a wealth of information; Life forms existed on Mars billions of years ago. But when the planet lost its magnetic field, it had nothing to block the solar wind, which slowly bled off the planet's atmosphere. This complicated the evolution of a biosphere. The ionizing radiation broke up organic molecules. If life was on Mars in the past, when the planet was wetter with a thicker atmosphere.
